Thailand criticized its neighbor Cambodia on Sunday over moves to resolve the ongoing conflict between the two countries.
Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva questioned Cambodia’s decisions to refrain from calling for the involvement of international organizations regarding the April clashes that took place some 100 kilometers from the Preah Vihear temple.
The border conflict between the two countries has already caused dozens of casualties.
Abhisit pointed out that Cambodia was quick to “internationalize” problems when clashes first occurred in the area surrounding the temple in February, but not when confrontations have occurred in different areas.
“In fact, during the second series of clashes, there had been more casualties and more losses. Yet Cambodia has made no statement about the need to involve third parties or observers or international organizations in the problems there. Even this morning, Prime Minister Hun Sen reiterated that the two areas need different approaches, which I find difficult to understand,” he said at a press conference in Jakarta on Saturday.
He said that there is “a certain inconsistency in insisting that in one area there has to involve a third party. There has to be international organizations and foreign entities at each, where Cambodia says they can still use various bilateral mechanisms, such as a general border committee or the Joint border committee, to resolve the problems.”
Abhisit said that lasting methods to resolve and prevent clashes must involve discussions and agreements surrounding decisions to station troops along the border.
