Relations between Cambodia and Thailand remain heated despite the meeting of the two countries’ leaders which was mediated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta on Sunday.
Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Sen held a press conference just hours after the trilateral meeting calling on Thailand to sign the “terms of reference” on an observer team from Indonesia formed to monitor the cease-fire along the disputed border area.
“Once Thailand signs the acceptance of terms of reference [TOR], then the meetings of the general borders committee can start immediately,” Hun Sen said at the press conference, adding that Cambodia would not withdraw its troops from the temple area.
Thailand earlier said that the observer team from Indonesia could only be realized after Cambodian troops withdrew from the area. Thailand added that the country would sign the TOR letter on the preference of the Indonesian observer team after the meeting of the joint border committee.
Thailand Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is also slated to hold a press conference on the border dispute issue. The press conference with Abhisit is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Jakarta Convention Center.
The outcome of the trilateral meeting of head of states remains unclear.
